Welcome to the Realm of Neon Genesis Evangelion! This superbly constructed anime was made by a group called Gainax who specialise in anime and manga. This anime has also been turned into a TV series which has aired in Japan... They have also made movies which I haven't seen yet... Here is a brief synopsis of what Evangelion is all about. Here's how the story begins... in the year 2000 A.D. a huge object, first thought to be a comet or an asteroid, crashes in Antarctica. At the same time, a mysterious alien race sends a message to earth claiming that they are under the orders of God and have sent an "Angel" to the human race. It was soon revealed that the object that had crashed in Antarctica was a gigantic, living organism. It stayed inactive for a brief period of time and then self- destructed, blowing Antarctica to pieces. This explosion was so intense that the ice of the entire continent melted, provoking floods and destruction across the entire planet. The Angels said that they would return to see if the humans had learned something and, for 15 years, the human race prepared for their return, not knowing what they had done wrong. During these 15 years, an organization, called NERV, was formed to protect the planet and was given nearly unlimited funds to create Anti-Angel weapons. Of all the weapons they came up with, the most powerful was the Human Shaped giant cyborgs which were the fruit of the Angel technology captured fifteen years ago, code named EVANGELION (EVA). In the beginning there are only 3 Evangelion: EVA-00, EVA-01 and EVA-02. Each of these monstrous creatures, is electrically powered with a power cable plugged on its back, and needs a pilot to synchronize with, in order to tap the EVA units tremendous full power. One of the most peculiar detail is that the pilot must be a 14 years old if the synchronization is to be successful.
